Article: Furniture Piece With a Big Design Role

Furniture Piece With a Big Design Role

Some of the most useful pieces of furniture are also the easiest to overlook.

The side table is a good example.

It rarely becomes the centrepiece of a living room, and it is seldom the first item someone notices when entering a home. Yet remove it from the arrangement and its absence becomes immediately apparent.

The coffee cup has nowhere to go. The reading lamp loses its natural position. The space beside the sofa suddenly feels unfinished.

A side table is a small piece of furniture, but its contribution to the rhythm of a room is anything but small.

The Balance Between Form and Function

A good side table should serve a practical purpose without looking as though practicality was its only consideration.

Its height should relate comfortably to the surrounding seating. Its surface should be accessible without requiring unnecessary movement. Its base should allow it to sit naturally within the available space.

But beyond these considerations, the design itself matters.

A sculptural base can introduce an architectural quality to a living room. A circular top can soften an arrangement dominated by straight lines. A more geometric silhouette can create a sharper contemporary appearance.

These details determine whether a side table simply occupies a space or contributes to its design.

Choosing the Right Material

Materials play a particularly important role in smaller furniture pieces because they are often positioned close to other objects.

A metal side table can introduce a refined industrial quality. Glass creates visual lightness, especially in compact interiors. Wood brings warmth, while expressive marble-inspired finishes introduce pattern and character.

The most interesting arrangements often come from contrast.

A dark side table beside a light sofa, for instance, creates definition. A metallic base paired with a richly patterned surface can introduce a sense of detail without requiring additional decoration.

The aim is to create a relationship between the furniture and its surroundings.

One Table or Two?

There is no universal answer.

A pair of matching side tables can create a sense of order, particularly beside a large sofa or within a symmetrical seating arrangement.

However, using different designs can make an interior feel more relaxed and individual.

One table might offer a larger surface for everyday objects, while a smaller sculptural piece provides a decorative accent.

In smaller living rooms, a compact side table can be more effective than a traditional coffee table, leaving more room to move while still providing a useful surface.

Styling Without Overcrowding

The side table does not need much decoration.

A small lamp, a book, a decorative bowl or a single object with an interesting shape can be enough.

The mistake is treating every available surface as an opportunity to display something.

A side table should remain useful. Its styling should complement its function, not interfere with it.

Allowing some of the surface to remain empty is often what makes the arrangement feel more sophisticated.

Small Furniture, Considered Design

In contemporary interiors, the value of a furniture piece is not necessarily determined by its size.

Smaller objects often provide the opportunity to experiment with unusual forms, materials and finishes without making a room feel overly decorated.

At Tavozza, we believe these details deserve the same attention as larger furniture pieces. A side table should be considered in terms of its proportions, material expression and relationship with the space around it.

Because the furniture that makes a home work beautifully is not always the furniture that takes up the most room.
