Our Thoughts: Styling a Console Table

Our Thoughts: Styling a Console Table

There is something interesting about the spaces we notice first when entering a home. They are rarely the largest rooms or the most expensive corners. Often, it is a small entrance, a thoughtfully arranged hallway or a quiet wall that holds our attention before we have even stepped inside.

A console table often occupies this very space.

Traditionally placed against a wall or behind a sofa, the console table has evolved into something much more than a practical surface. It has become an opportunity to express personal taste, introduce beautiful materials and create a sense of character without overwhelming a room.

Yet styling one well is an art in itself.

Begin With the Character of the Table

Before adding decorative objects, consider the table itself. Its proportions, material and silhouette should determine the direction of the arrangement.

A console with a sculptural base or a distinctive marble-inspired surface already carries considerable visual interest. It does not necessarily need an elaborate arrangement to make an impression.

For more understated designs, the surrounding objects can introduce contrast. A ceramic vessel, a carefully selected sculpture or a decorative bowl can bring depth to an otherwise simple composition.

The idea is not to fill every available inch. It is to allow each element enough space to be appreciated.

The Importance of a Mirror

One of the most enduring combinations in interior styling is a console table paired with a mirror.

A large mirror can introduce light, create a sense of openness and establish a visual centre above the furniture. In an entrance hallway, it also serves a practical purpose, offering a final glance before leaving home.

For contemporary interiors, consider a mirror with a restrained frame or an interesting geometric outline. The relationship between the mirror and the console should feel intentional rather than perfectly matched.

Sometimes, contrast creates the more interesting result.

Introduce Height Through Lighting

A table lamp is one of the easiest ways to bring warmth to a console arrangement. Its height draws the eye upwards, while the light creates a softer atmosphere in the evening.

Sculptural table lamps are particularly effective because they function as decorative objects even when switched off.

Alternatively, a smaller arrangement of decorative objects can create a similar sense of vertical movement. The important thing is to avoid keeping everything at the same height.

A successful arrangement has a natural rhythm. Some elements attract attention immediately, while others reveal themselves gradually.

Work With Materials, Not Just Colours

Beautiful interiors are often remembered for their materials.

The contrast between a polished surface and brushed metal, the softness of a ceramic object against a structured table, or the visual depth of a marble-inspired finish can make a simple arrangement feel considered.

Rather than introducing too many colours, work with a restrained palette and allow different textures to create interest.

A combination of warm metallics, neutral ceramics and expressive surfaces can feel timeless without appearing traditional.

Leave Room for the Unexpected

A common mistake in console table styling is trying to make everything symmetrical.

Symmetry can certainly create order, but a more relaxed arrangement often feels personal. A sculpture placed slightly off-centre, a book beneath a decorative object or a single statement vase can introduce an element of spontaneity.

The arrangement should feel as though it belongs to the home, not as though it has been assembled solely for a photograph.

A Small Piece of Furniture With a Lasting Presence

A console table may not occupy much floor space, but its influence on a room can be surprisingly significant.

It can establish the mood of an entrance, bring an empty wall to life or introduce a material that becomes a recurring feature throughout the interior.

At Tavozza, we see furniture as an opportunity to bring together material expression, thoughtful proportions and everyday functionality. A well-designed console is not simply something to place against a wall. It is a piece that quietly shapes how a space is experienced.

And sometimes, that is precisely what makes a home memorable.
